Euros 2011 – News from Barcelona

We got news from Barcelona:

“we found a spot that might be able to host the event the first weekend
of june. If they confirm with us, then we keep those dates. If they say
they can’t do it, then it’ll be the last weekend of june…”

“Here is the first batch of spots allocated to each country. Spots were
chosen on the base of the pre-registration sheet filled by the cities,
which gave us an idea of not only the number of players in each country,
but also the strength of their communities.

UK 10
Germany 8
France 8
Italy 7
Spain 5
Switzerland 5
Benelux 3
Hungary 1
Portugal 1
——————————-
Total: 48 teams.

We are making sure we can have a wildcard tourney, so that those that
couldn’t make it in their local qualifiers can still come and play.”

More information in the official Euro thread at League of Bike Polo and the German discussion at Deutsches Bikepolo Forum.

“Dates are most likely to be pushed back. We are looking at the last weekend of june, not the first one anymore. (23-27 of june). Will confirm in the next few days. Do not get your tickets yet!”

First Spring Polo in Munich

Last weekend Poloholica’s Anja and 5 other brave warriors from Bikepolo München played at the Greifmasters Tournament (Bench Minor) in Karlsruhe. Of course a few more players from Bikepolo München travelled with them to play pick-up games and support their team mates, so there weren’t many staying at home in Munich that weekend. You think there wouldn’t be enough players left in Munich? Come on, what would you do at 16,4 °C on a sunday?

Epiphanie Bike Polo Weekend in Rouen

Last weekend, Guidoline organised the Epiphanie Bike Polo Weekend 2011. 16 Teams, mainly from France, England and Switzerland came to play. Angie also went to the Normandie to play with Adam and Iain from London. Here´s her report:

“It was terribly cold but we had a really nice weekend. The court in Rouen is a roofed hockey field with a perfect surface. The dimensions are decent, the field could be a bit longer and less wide though. But one of the best courts I´ve ever played so far.

We started the weekend with throw-ins on Friday afternoon followed by drinks at a local bar. The actual tourney took place on Saturday. It was not only the coldest tournament but also the earliest. We had to be at the court at 8 o´clock. The sun was barely up when we left our host´s home.

The tourney was simple, nice and friendly. Every team had to bring a present for another team and put it under a Polo Christmas tree. After the tourney each team picked one of the presents. The format we played was totally new and showed again that this was meant to be fun. First, the teams were arranged on the schedule according to their registration order on Saturday morning. Team 1 vs Team 2, Team 3 vs Team 4, and so forth. Games were 10 minutes. In case of a draw, the winner was decided by the game “stone-paper-rock”. After the game, the teams could chose their positions in the next round, the winner in the winner´s bracket, the loser in the loser´s bracket. We played six rounds to determine the order of the teams. No eliminations, no real finals. The last round was played bottom up, so the last game on that day was for positions 1 and 2, Call me Daddy vs Iron Ponies. It was an exciting game between those two outstanding teams that had to be chosen by a golden goal. Iron Ponies scored that and became Epiphanie champions, so they could pick a present first. Then the rest of the teams could pick their present according to their ranking. My team Marco Polo finished 10th, the present we picked was from the Hooks and contained three artzines from Rouen-based artists. Nice!

Sunday almost everyone came to the court and we had a good day of throw-ins.

Thanks to Adèle for putting us up, thanks to Adam and Iain for being my teammates and thanks to the Rouen polo crew for organising this, I´ll definitely come again next time.”
